The voices grow louder, but not loud enough to distinguish over the sound of my heart as it shatters into pieces. Tiny little pieces that will blow away with the breeze if I move from where I stand.

Duncan’s voice booms through the door. He’s right next to the door, I can feel it, can see his face in my mind. He’s angry, furious even. Why? Because he was caught, because he made a mistake? He’s only seconds away from opening the door. If I know anything right now, I know I can’t be standing here when he opens the door. Standing like a lost puppy begging, seeking and pleading for forgiveness. Doubt rushes through my mind. Did I do something to make him seek another woman’s affection? Doesn’t he love me? Has my perfect little life turned into a nightmare?

My hand shakes violently, the stinging burning sensation running from my fingers down to my wrist. My eyes are locked on his face while he holds his hand tightly to his face. His expression is one that I’ll never forget. He’s furious, and his eyes seem to be popping out of his face. I take a small step back, never taking my eyes of his. As I stare at him, a worried feeling a sudden rush of regret washes over me. The crack of my hand across his face resembled the sound of a dry whip lashing against steel.

He reaches for me once more, and this time I don’t back away while his fingers graze over my cold skin. I didn’t realize I was so cold until he touched me. Goose-bumps shoot across my skin, and I can’t help but gasp when his hand wraps around my arm.
